What is it ?
An operational “intermezzo” or “time out” during which all members of a team are invited and guided to openly and constructively reflect on their practices, under the supervision of a trained “observer-debriefer”. It features an interruption, i.e. a short period of time during which an activity stops and the players, workers of performers rest or talk to each other and/or to their coach.
Why ?
Because (self-)observation, reflection and open sharing remain the most wise and efficient (self-)improvement attitudes.
How is it done ?
First, the observer-debriefer witnesses the activity or performed by the team.
At a time agreed with the team (e.g. in the course or at the end of the operations or actions), the team members engage in a professional, frank analysis of “what happened” and “how it happened”, by openly and constructively sharing observations, perceptions, impressions or feelings. Under the coaching of the observer-debriefer, the team is encouraged to pinpoint the most limiting and/or risky conducts, and to collectively look for ways to eliminate or considerably reduce them.
Who for ?
For any professional situation in which a qualitative output and/or success depends from an impeccable interaction between all the team players.
For all practitioners whose activities and work are performed closely in teams (e.g. surgery teams).
For any task which cannot be carried out without a close and intense collaboration of different actors.
